BEECHWORTH MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK
(www.northeastvictoria.online)
Beechworth Mountain Bike Park was created by members of the Beechworth Chain Gang (see link below), in conjunction with Parks Victoria, and offers a varied terrain to explore, much of it suitable for the more experienced, rather than the inexperienced.
The scenery is excellent, being that granite-outcrop and native pine mix that typifies much of the Beechworth area, but don’t plan on admiring the scenery too much - there is work to be done, and concentrating on wheel placement is a high priority.
The Park is located just off Alma Road, and can be accessed from the town centre by following High Street to the east. This merges with Havelock Road, and then Alma Road, which is an obtuse left turn at a t-junction cum cross-roads.
Having turned into Alma Road, you should have the Beechworth Golf Course to your left, and then drive past Sorrenberg Winery (also on your left). Continue along , ignoring Kibbel Lane off to the right, and then lookout for the signposted informal car park on the left.
There is plenty of shaded parking here, and an information board detailing the extensive array of tracks on offer, as well as some reminders about safety, and that all-important protective clothing.
Many riders take a small repair kit with them, and the necessary tools to fix simple problems. As well, take some nibbles in case you get peckish, and at least one litre of water per person. Mobile coverage in the Park quite good, with Telstra currently providing the best outcome.
The Park has an extensive array of bike paths colour coded green (easy stuff) and blue (getting harder), with a black coded jumps course for the experts, as well as a downhill course. There is quite a lot of single track stuff, and these are signposted with the appropriate Do not enter signs to prevent two-way traffic.
A sketch map with colour coded trails is available for download from the Chain Gang website (see below) and this is a must do before setting off on any of the trails.
