LAKE SAMBELL
(www.northeastvictoria.online)
Lake Sambell is close to the centre of Beechworth and is a very pleasant paddling venue. There are boat ramps on the northern (Junction Road) shore and the southern (McConville Avenue) shore. As well there are several convenient launching places amongst the pine trees lining McConville Avenue.
Lake Sambell is actually the flooded site of abandoned gold diggings and evidence of the gold mining era is still apparent around the Lake in the form of starkly eroded cliffs and an absence of native vegetation.
The Lake is very popular with canoeists and swimmers on a hot day. There are picnic and barbeque facilities at the northern edge of the Lake, adjacent to the swimming pool, and the nearby Lake Sambell Caravan Park has all facilities.
After canoeing on the Lake there is additional entertainment in the form of a walking track which winds around the Lake, giving great views of the township and Lake.
