LAKE WILLIAM HOVELL
(www.northeastvictoria.online)
This small, but very scenic, lake offers excellent canoeing in picturesque surroundings, located on the East Branch - King River, 20km south of Whitfield. Refer to the King Valley description for more details.
The shoreline of the Lake is spectacular in places, with cliff faces rising abruptly from the waterline. Some of the ledges, at water level under the cliffs, make excellent swimming spots. There are several picnic-barbeque areas on the lakeshore which provide convenient launching spots. Most of the dead trees in the Lake have been cleared, however the original course of the King River is still discernible.
When the Lake is full it is an interesting six hour trip to paddle to the point where the river enters the Lake. Camping is not permitted on the lakeshore - the nearest formal camping areas are at Whitfield, and slightly further north, with fewer amenities, at Edi Cutting.
