East Kiewa Rockpool - Mermaid Pool

The East Kiewa River is one of the main alpine rivers of Victoria, and rises in the high country around Falls Creek, and the Bogong High Plains. This short walk provides a sample of its exceptional riverine scenery, and is very enjoyable.

The walk leads to a scenic rockpool on the East Kiewa, and can be tackled entirely on foot, or with the aid of a short drive. In either case, the walk is rated as AWTGS-2.

Starting out from the environs of the town centre, take Hollands Street, and then make a right turn, and a left turn, to pick up Tawonga Crescent so as to head upslope to the Golf Club. loading...

From here, the track initially parallels the Bogong High Plains Road, but then cuts loose to do it’s own thing as a beautiful single file track that leads around the valley slopes.

Take the signposted left turn at about 1.7km that leads down to the East Kiewa River, and follow this footpad as it descends down towards the valley floor, and the appropriately named Rockpool Road.

From here, follow the signage (which points upstream) to the Rockpool (about 250m away), then Mermaid Pool (a further 400m), and then return to town via the same route.

If you prefer to drive to Rockpool Road, take Damms Road from the northern side of the township, and then swing right onto Rockpool Road.

The overall distance for the complete walk is about five kilometres, and the time required is about two hours. The shortened version covers about 1.2km, and takes about 50 minutes.
