West Kiewa Trail
The West Kiewa River rises in the high country around Mount Hotham, and the Bogong High Plains, and this ‘there-and-back’ walk provides an opportunity to sample its beautiful valley scenery.
The walk starts from the Mountain Bike Park, easily accessible via the Bogong High Plains Road out of Mount Beauty, and is rated AWTGS-3. The Park is sign-posted to the right, about 700m from the roundabout encountered as you enter Mount Beauty from the Kiewa Valley Highway.
From the car park, take the metal stairway, and then veer over to the roadway leading west, and follow this to a four way intersection.
Keep left at this point, and follow the slope upwards to a sign-posted turn-off to the right (sign-posted "West Kiewa Road and Power Station").
This now leads to a terrace system that overlooks the Kiewa from a great height. There are tantalising glimpses of the white water below, as well as some nice sounds of the cascading water. Bird calls are also common, and this a nice venue for bird watching.
Continue to follow the roadway, through to where there are glimpses of the West Kiewa Power Station down to the right.
Turning around at this point will have made the walk length about seven kilometres, but there is plenty of opportunity to shorten this by turning around at any time.
If you would like some maps, the best option is the 1:25 000 VicMap Tawonga South (8324-4-S) and the 1:25 000 VicMap Feathertop North (8324-3-N).
