ROCKY VALLEY LAKE
(www.northeastvictoria.online)
Rocky Valley Lake is the major storage of the Kiewa Valley, and is located south-east of Falls Creek Ski Village. Access to the Lake is easy via the Bogong High Plains Road out of Mount Beauty. Falls Creek is about 50 minutes driving time from Mount Beauty, and Rocky Valley Lake is a further five minutes from Falls Creek, along the Omeo Road. The Omeo Road follows the lake shore fairly closely making launching very easy.
Rocky Valley provides an opportunity for lake canoeing in distinct alpine surroundings, however as the Lake is above the tree line it is very exposed to wind. As well the Lake’s waters are always cool, if not cold, and it is recommended that paddlers stay close to the shore at all times. The water close to the Dam Wall (that is, the Falls Creek end of the Lake) is a prohibited boating area.
The best time for canoeing is in January when the High Plains are a pleasant escape from the heat down in the valley and the alpine wildflowers are in bloom. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the High Plains and there are nominated sites for camping, with very basic facilities, at Raspberry Saddle, 10km from Rocky Valley on the Omeo Road.
Falls Creek has a good range of services and accommodation on offer during the summer, however you should check ahead for particular requirements.
