WODONGA TOWN RIDES

The great city of Wodonga has a number of designated urban bike paths, all of them detailed in a handy brochure called Wodonga Pathways, available from Visitor Information Centres in the North-east, and downloadable from the Wodonga VIC (see below). loading...

The paths use a mix of on-trail (off-road) and on-road sections, and some nice bright safety colours are highly recommended for those on-road sections. All of the routes described are multi-purpose, being used by riders, walkers and dog-walkers.

Just north of the border, Albury also has a great network of cycle pathways, and these are detailed in another handy brochure (called Albury Trails), also available from Visitor Information Centres in the North-east.

Baranduda Link

Baranduda is one of the southern suburbs of Wodonga, and this cycleway provides a means of commuting for Baranduda residents, a link to the High Country Rail Trail, and a nice bit of exercise for the rest of us. The Link runs from just near the Baranduda Community Centre, and meanders around for a few kilometres before joining up with the Kiewa Valley Highway. It then follows this stretch of bitumen so as to join the Murray Valley Highway, just south of Bandiana. Total distance covered is about 9.5km, with a mix of on-road and on-trail cycling conditions.

This cycle route links up directly with the Rail Trail Link.

Birallee Park

This is one of the shorter cycle routes in Wodonga area, and covers a short 2.5km, but provides a link through a section of the western urban area, starting at the Birallee Shopping Centre, and finishing at Felltimber Creek Road. There is a mix of on-road and on-trail cycling conditions, but the on-road stuff is through quiet-ish urban streets.

This cycle route links up directly with the Felltimber Creek and West Wodonga routes.

Felltimber Creek

Felltimber Creek Road runs west from the urban area, and this cycleway basically loops around the said Felltimber Creek Valley, providing some great cycling entertainment. Good places to start are either of the picnic-playground areas along Felltimber Creek Road (an extension of Pearce Street, which runs off the Beechworth Road at a large roundabout).

From the picnic areas, you can head east along Felltimber Creek Road, and then swing back to town, with Federation Hill to your right. The complete loop has mix of a mix of on-road and on-trail conditions, and covers about 11km, but (as with all of the routes described) there is no need to do the full loop.

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; Birallee Park, House Creek, West Wodonga and Yarralumla - Castle Creek. loading...

Gateway Island - Belvoir Park

Belvoir Park is a former wetland area, and Gateway Island was formed by the meandering path of the Murray River, with the Island being surrounded by the Murray River to its north, and Wodonga Creek to the south. The ride described here sets off from Belvoir Park, which is located immediately to the north of the Wodonga CBD; map 322 in the VicRoads Street Directory has all the fine details.

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; House Creek, Rail Trail Link and the Train Station Link.

House Creek

House Creek is a tributary of the Murray River, and flows right through the heart of the southern suburban area. This is a five kilometre run, and is completely on-trail. The southern terminus is at Willow Park, and the northern terminus is at Belvoir Park, with many intermediate access-egress points.

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; Felltimber Creek, Gateway Island - Belvoir Park, West Wodonga and Yarralumla - Castle Creek.

Killara Link

The Link being provided here is a link from the High Country Rail Trail (that leads from Wodonga to east of Tallangatta), through to the Kiewa River, and the Kiewa River walking trail. The Link extends from Whytes Road (on the Murray Valley Highway, east of town) through to a picnic area alongside the Kiewa River, and is about 1.5km in length.

This cycle route links up directly with the Rail Trail Link.

Rail Trail Link

The Rail Trail being linked here is the High Country Rail Trail that leads from Wodonga to east of Tallangatta. The first part of the Link runs from just east of the CBD and follows the Murray Valley Highway through to Whytes Road, and then swings south to pick up the main Trail.

Distance covered is about 10.5km, with a mix of on-road and on-trail cycling conditions. The second (and alternative) route leaves from the northern side of the CBD and makes a wide swing past the north-eastern side of the urban area, before meeting up the the Murray Valley Highway at Bandiana; this second route being slightly longer than the first.

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; Baranduda Link, Killara Link and Gateway Island - Belvoir Park.

Train Station Link

This cycle path provides a link between Belvoir Park and the new railway station. It only covers about 1.5km, and is more functional than scenic; it is however, completely on-trail.

West Wodonga

The West Wodonga cycleway loops around the western suburban area, and is one of the longer routes described here. It provides linkage between Birallee Shopping Centre, LaTrobe University and Wodonga TAFE, as well as the Moorfield Park Drive wetlands. The complete loop covers about 11km, with a mix of on-road and on-trail cycling conditions.

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; Birallee Park, Felltimber Creek, House Creek, and Yarralumla - Castle Creek.

Yarralumla - Castle Creek

Yarralumla is one of the southern suburbs of Wodonga, and the cycle route described here loops in and out of the southern suburbs providing a nice means of getting around for shopping, socialising or just for the fun of it.

Distance covered is about nine kilometres, with a mix of on-trail and on-road conditions (most of the route is on-trail).

This cycle route links up directly with the following routes; Felltimber Creek, House Creek and West Wodonga.
