BEECHWORTH to YACKANDANDAH RAIL TRAIL
This new Rail Trail stretches from Beechworth to Yackandandah, basically following the path of the former railway that ran between the two towns, covering about 26km.
Construction commenced in 2018, and is now complete (2024); a map of the actual route is accessible via the link below.
See also, the Indigo Shire website (Link below).
Once clear of the urban area the route follows Kibell Lane, and for about four kilometres this is a shared surface with vehicular traffic.
There is a 40km/hr speed limit here, and not a lot of properties in the area, but expect to come across several vehicles whilst riding this part of the route.
Given the hilly terrain, there are many railway cuttings to cycle through, and nice views to enjoy.
Gradients are quite easy, mostly downhill in the 13km to Wooragee, and then a further 13km to Yackandandah, with uphill and downhill sections.
The line was one of the first railways to be built in Victoria, having opened in 1891; it closed in 1954.
Some maps of the Rail Trail do not show the tunnel under the Yackandandah Road (near the Beechworth-Wodonga Road roundabout) as being operational, but it is in use.
